ELIGIBILITY

Any person who has completed a minimum of one semester of band at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln is eligible to become a member of the UNL Band Alumni Association (BAA).

There are five classes of membership: Charter, Life, Succeeding, Honorary (non-voting status) and Student (non-voting status).

COST

The first year alumni are out of the band program, their annual dues are waved. Yearly dues are $20 per year to become a Succeeding Member or $30 per year for married couples. To become a Life Member, dues are a one time fee of $200, which can be made payable in $50 installments over four consecutive years.

BENEFITS

Members of the BAA, have one vote on any matter submitted to a vote of the membership during the Annual Business Meeting which is held during the Reunion Weekend. This meeting gives the Board of Directors a chance to update members on various events held throughout the year in support of the UNL Band Program and for current BAA Members. An update of the BAA financial status (operating and trust funds) is also provided to the membership. Elections are held for board members whose terms have expired.

Current BAA members are able to participate in the Reunion Weekend activities and other events sponsored by the BAA throughout the year. They are also eligible to be a part of special committees headed by a Board member.

The Belle Lyre, the official newsletter of the UNL Band Alumni Association, is published twice per year. Current members receive an issue in the fall/winter, and all alumni who have registered with the BAA receive an issue in the summer which contains the registration information for alumni to renew/begin membership, donate to the trust funds and register for the annual Reunion Weekend.

Current BAA members will also be on a mailing list to receive updates on concerts and performances of the various ensembles of the UNL Band Program throughout the year.

ACTIVITIES

Each fall, an annual reunion for band alumni is held during a home football game. The Cornhusker Marching Band invites all BAA members to participate in a half-time show. A pep rally is held on the Friday night prior to the game. It is a family-friendly event full of good food, entertainment and reminiscing. An informal post-game party is held following the game. It’s a great time to kick-back and relax and renew old friendships.

In December, a reception is held for all alumni, their families, the current band members and their families following the Cornhusker Marching Band’s Highlights Concert. It is a good time to enjoy some refreshments and thank the band members for their performances over the past year.

SUPPORT

Each year, the BAA provides the waist bags worn by the band members throughout the year. These bags are used to keep charts, music, pencils, spot markers, etc. with them on the field during rehearsals. New members receive their bag at the first rehearsal of the year and will keep them throughout their time with the band. The BAA also includes free pencils, highlighters, band-aids, and coupons for local area merchants to help with the cost of eating during band camp when the dormitory cafeterias are not yet open.

The BAA helps sponsor the annual Band Banquet for the band members. Besides providing financial support for the banquet, the BAA sponsors the Outstanding Bandsman award presented each year to a deserving recipient of the Marching Band. The award recipient receives $100 and a plaque. Their name is also added to the plaque of recipients which is on display at Westbrook Music Building.

The BAA maintains two funds that are administered by the UNL Foundation. The purpose of the Bands Alumni Trust Fund is to benefit the “bands of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln” in any such way designated by the “Association” (as represented by the elected Executive Board). The Donald A. Lentz Memorial Fund is used to commission new works for the UNL concert bands and to fund the appearance of guest artists with the UNL concert bands.

HISTORY

On May 1, 1974, 217 members of the UNL Band program came together to form the University of Nebraska – Lincoln Band Alumni Association, Inc. (BAA). The BAA was formed for a dual purpose to establish resources for both long and short term projects for the benefit of the UNL Bands and to assist the Cornhusker Marching Band in raising funds for a three-week European tour in 1975. Both efforts were supported by Director of Bands, Jack Snider and Director of Bands Emeritus, Donald Lentz. The original Charter Member fee of $10 was collected from each of the 217 charter members with half the proceeds going in the Band European fund.

The first issue of the Belle Lyre was dated March 11, 1974, and the first reunion was held September 27-28, 1974. This first reunion included the annual business meeting, lunch with the band and attendance at the football game. The first appearance of the Alumni Band came at the second reunion, held September 19-20, 1975, with 120 in attendance.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

There are five positions for the Board of Directors. Each Board Member is a Charter, Life or Succeeding-paid Member of the Band Alumni Association. Each member serves a three-year term in office. At the end of the term, the Board Member may be re-elected by the voting members of the Band Alumni Association to fulfill another term.

The elected Board Members appoint each of the Officers to serve an unlimited term. The offices include President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Executive Secretary-General Manager, Treasurer, Historian and Webmaster
